Marcia McCann is not your typical accountant. She didn't start out to be an accountant - she wanted to be pharmacist at Sick Kids’ Hospital – but didn't get in (long story). So after a year of pre-meds at University of Toronto, Marcia transferred to University of Waterloo and graduated with a degree in Recreation (no, that isn’t a typo!). She articled with a national CA firm in Hamilton and continued her education part-time, at night. In 1981, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant and a year later, completed her MBA degree. During her time working with the national firm, she first gained experience doing audits and personal/ corporate tax returns. Later on, she split her time between standards setting and designing/ delivering training programs for the firm’s professionals. The rest of her time was spent consulting with small business clients – working with them to develop and implement plans to improve their business “bottom lines”. In 1991, Marcia started her own firm. From a very modest beginning - a desk in the spare bedroom - the firm has grown to a team of 6 professionals. As she often tells her clients – she has probably made every mistake a small business owner can make along the way – and the business has not only survived, but thrived. She encourages her clients to dream, and then work hard to make those dreams a reality. Teaching has always played an important role for Marcia. Over the years, she has taught in professional programs for CGA, CMA and CA students; at Humber College, York and Ryerson Universities and continuing professional development programs for CAs. Marcia has continued her interest in standards setting, spending several years as a part-time practice inspector for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, and has served on committees dealing with independence and quality control projects. Marcia uses her unique background and skill set for the benefit of her clients. Her experience of working with her parents as employees has helped her understand the additional stresses and benefits of family businesses. Her science and arts educational background allows her to quickly grasp the issues facing her clients – permitting more time to consider options and move forward with practical solutions. Her teaching experience hopefully means she can translate technical issues so that everyone understands the issues to be dealt with. Marcia has long believed in giving back to the community. Over the years, she has served on the Boards of the Volunteer Centre for Peel; as Treasurer for the Oakville Arts Council; the Accounting Advisory Committee for both Sheridan and Humber Colleges, and more recently has been an advisor to the Board of a Charity devoted to reducing Youth Homelessness. In her spare time, Marcia is an avid traveler and nature enthusiast – having been lucky enough to visit China, Africa and Antarctica, amongst other destinations. She enjoys photography and some of her nature and travel pictures are displayed on the walls of the office. More recently, she has caught the renovation bug and is learning what that world is all about. |
